Havana
USCats 2002 Tourn
Had a really good weekend in Havana. Got wet in the tournament. Like really wet!
Friday went very well. Got up there and found our spot and caught a few
fish. Met my aunt at the boat dock and took her for a boat ride. We saw a pair of
mature bald eagles with a nest that had a chick in it. Very rare sight
and will have the pictures out soon.
Went out to dinner with my aunt as Willie wanted to work on the boat and
find the other catmen. So we went out to dinner and somehow got it for free
since she had made reservations for us along with 3 plates of turtle (which
they ran out of). But, they did manage to find one serving of turtle, so it
wasn’t a total waste.
Drove back to town and started the search for my partner. Went to
where he was supposed to be and well...he wasn’t there. His new nickname was Fish Bait (don’t ask me why). After checking two places, finally tracked him down at the Stag
Tavern. That is a story in itself.
The tournament started out with a bolt of lightning, loud crash of
thunder and Virgil on the speaker yelling “Boat One! Take Off!”. We were boat 15 out of 60. It rained and it rained and it poured. Willies’ face was red, wet and sore after the trip to our hole. He didn’t complain, but said we need full face helmets next time for this crap.
Caught 5 fish total weighing 12.3 pounds with the big one around 4.2
pounds. Caught most of them on shrimp.
I told Willie to put on a leach and dangle it off the
front of the boat. Finally he decided “well ok umm”. Played around up
there for awhile, took his pole and dropped it off the front off the boat with
the bait just off the bottom. Still raining quite a bit to
say the least, it wasn’t 5 minutes and the pole bobbed and then took off as
he grabbed it.. Hey... I think this is a big one. Get The Net!
That was one for the boat.
Bailed out 125 gallons of water in the boat with a five gallon bucket
using a coffee cup as a bailer. Estimated another 300 gallons was still in the boat and
could hardly get it up on plane heading back to the weigh-in.
By 10 o'clock we were soaking wet. Rain still coming down by the buckets
full. I made a very critical decision sitting out there freezing and wet.
I definitely need new rain gear and an umbrella!
We didn’t do all that bad. I think we placed in the teens out of 60
boats. Most of the circuit boys did not do all that well and the locals pretty
much caught the most fish we think. Looking forward to Quincy and gearing up for that one. Did
decide one thing though, the next boat we get will be bigger, faster and have a bilge pump......
